THE THING ABOUT ACCIDENTAL MOUTH TOUCHING

OKAY so obviously lilo’s constant need to kissper with their ENTIRE BODIES was EVENTUALLY going to lead to accidental mouth touching. THIS WAS A LONG TIME COMING. And like, as incredible as it is to have pictures like this of my OTP that AREN’T MANIPS, I think my favorite real life part of the entire #lilokiss is what happens immediately AFTER they accidentally touch mouths.

Because while Liam is both SHOCKED AND ALSO DELIGHTED, Louis’s reaction is clearly more in the PURE SHOCK category. Liam’s immediate response is OH MAN HOW CRAZY WAS THAT LET’S LAUGH ABOUT IT SO MUCH BECAUSE CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT HAPPENED!!!! But that fades the SECOND Louis doesn’t mirror his reaction. He is so incredibly attuned to Louis’s response that he drops his own after a split second, and even takes a step back from Louis, literally GIVING HIM PHYSICAL SPACE for the first time in I don’t even know how long.

BUT THEN!!! THE MOST MAGICAL THING IS THAT LOUIS REGROUPS IN APPROXIMATELY HALF A SECOND. He has a moment of CLEAR SHOCK and then he takes out his ear monitor because RIGHT, WHERE WERE WE, WE WERE IN THE MIDDLE OF IMPORTANT KISSPERING WHEN WE WERE RUDELY INTERRUPTED BY ACCIDENTAL MOUTH TOUCHING. And he refuses (doesn’t even ACKNOWLEDGE) Liam’s offer of personal space, stepping right up in there again and establishes that NOTHING HAS CHANGED, NOTHING WEIRD HAS HAPPENED, THAT’S JUST BANTER, WHO HASN’T ACCIDENTALLY TOUCH MOUTHS WHILE MESSING AROUND WITH THEIR BOY. I don’t know if it was conscious and I have no idea what was going through Louis’s mind in that instant and I’m not actually interested in speculating about that part of it outside of fic, but what his ACTION did was reestablish normality for the two of them, no matter what the motivation was for doing it. He didn’t pull back or freak out or push Liam away. He took literally one second to process and then got BACK TO REALITY.

SO MUCH of their friendship can be seen in that second and a half. So much of the give and take, the call and response aspect of how they FUNCTION as a TEAM played out in that TEENY TINY MOMENT between accidental mouth touching and kisspering. And all of what we saw in that second and a half is so firmly supported and SOLIDIFIED by how Louis was on twitter and his instagram on Sunday, and the fact that LITERALLY NOTHING CHANGED in how they engaged with each other (or with the fans) during the shows on Sunday and Monday nights. I JUST HAVE SO MANY FEELINGS ABOUT THEIR FRIENDSHIP AND HOW SPECIAL IT IS TO BOTH OF THEM AND THE PROTECTIVE DEFENSIVE BUBBLE THEY’VE BUILT AROUND IT EVEN WHILE SHARING SO! MUCH! WITH US ON STAGE DURING EVERY SHOW. They’ve managed to find and maintain this BALANCE there that genuinely blows my mind, especially given the history of this fandom, and my heart can’t take it. I LOVE THEM SO MUCH.
